Have a Dell 6000 Inspiron with windows XP that I use at home as a
wireless laptop connected to a Buffalo WMR-G54.

This was working fine until I took the laptop away for a week. On
return, I couls not connect to my router. I re-entered the fixed IP
address details (they appear to have been lost) for my connection and
the wireless connection appeared to have been made (the icon for my
network on my laptop says that I am connected ok).

However, internet explorer fails to retrieve any page and my antivirus
software cannot upgrade by this connection. I also appear to have lost
access to shared folders on my pc.

Thus, I do not appear to have any network access, even though the
laptop suggests I have connected ok.

    Any ideas?

    What does ipconfig /all report?
The connected wireless icon doesn't mean that you
can access the gateway or DNS.

Did you also set the default DNS server and gateway?
