come help one and all...pretty please...

i recently aqquired, for free, a Sony Vaio Desktop 'puter. Its about 5 years old but not bad. I went to set up my Belkin wireless adapter on it, which worked on the previous one and also on my laptop that is still running, and it seemed that installation was successful. However the computer can find no wireless networks. I have reinstalled and reinstalled and have checked everything i think i thought i know. :stupido:
the box for the adapter is on the task bar...showing red naturally as it cant connect. The adapter is a solid green which means its working but not active. Sony are no help...i am hoping someone else is.
    thanks
    steve....
