Wireles HDMI units e.g. Asus WL-HDMI500, were demonstrated at computer
shows as early as the beginning of last year. I was hoping that they
would be mainstream by Christmas this year but I have not yet seen a
    unit for sale.

Anyone got any updates on wireless HDMI units?

AS the Markets are far to small here I don't think so.

That is why Philips and Sony are closing down here.

LOL. 1499. They're having a laugh, surely! At that sort of cost it
would be cheaper for me to knock down my walls and run proper HDMI
    cable and more.

No, they are serious, but then again they are selling to the same market
that will pay US$499 for a cat5 ethernet cable
    http://www.usa.denon.com/productdetails/3429.asp

In fact, on that basis they are underpricing the system by thousands of
    dollars.

Except there is a limit to the distance you can run HDMI.
There are devices for running HDMI over UTP up to about 100m or fiber
    for longer runs.
