Is it possible to connect a wireless access-point directly to a cable modem
    without a router?

Sure, you'll just need to set up static IP addresses instead of dynamic
ones. Unless your cable company hands out public IPs rather freely,
you'll need to set up private IPs, such as 192.168.0.XXX.
