    Hello,

For Windows7 on a new PC: will 4 GB of memory be adequate to run
    (well) as a 64 bit OS ?

If 4 is O.K., does Windows7 automatically know what to run as 64 bit
    applications ?

    Thanks.

Depends entirely on what APPLICATIONS you intend to run on the host. So
do you now run a total number of applications that exceed the available
*physical* RAM space? How much unused (free) physical RAM is there now
or when you run your typical suite of programs? What programs do you
run that suck up all the physical RAM space and require the use of
    virtual memory (pagefile) space?

Memory is damn cheap. Is there a reason why you are buying a whole new
computer but are worried about spending another $50 to add another 2GB
(assuming you had 2GB before on your old host)?

Only 64-bit applications run under the 64-bit memory space.
Applications dictate what mode under which they run. The OS cannot
magically make a 32-bit app into a 64-bit app. You must, however, make
damn sure that all you hardware drivers have 64-bit versions. Have you
    checked?
