I don't want to claim credit for this solution as it's probably posted
somewhere else already but hopefully this will be easier to find and
maybe save some of the grief I had for a while.

    My network problem:
I have XP and a wireless network that wouldn't work on one pc only.
The problem pc said it had acquired my network connection but it
really hadn't because it could ping the router but not receive the
ping from the router. I had checked all the usual software settings
and all settings seemed correct. I also removed my firewall for this
    effort.

    My solution:
It turned out that the problem was the WEP security on the router. I
had to remove the WEP security on the router to allow the connection
to really be established on the problem pc (it connected immediately
to my network when I removed the WEP on the router) and then I put
back the WEP security on the router and the problem pc still held the
    network connection. Problem solved.
