Windows XP Running slowly

Discussion in 'Computer Support' started by Richard Cotton, Oct 20, 2007.

  1. Hello

If anyone can suggest any help that would be great.

I had a problem with my hard drive recently so bought a new one and
installed XP onto that. Windows fixed my old drive so i now have that as a
    slave just for storage.

The XP though is running everything really really slowly. I havent installed
anything other than XP and all the updates onto the new master drive and it
runs slower than my old drive did when it had XP and loads of other bits and
    bobs installed.

Does anyone know of anything i can do to get windows to work quicker - takes
ages to open things like explorer, media player, stuff like control panel
does the little torch while it thinks about what should be there

I have 1gig of ram so not sure wht the probloem is

    Thanks

Hi Richard - Sounds like you did a clean install. It's likely that an
appropiate DMA mode isn't set (IIRC it defaults to PIO on initial install.
Try Googling "Turn on DMA in Windows XP" (I'd talk you through it, but I
have to leave most scosch for the Hospital.
