when i shutdown my pc in the normal way from the start menu i get a
blue windows xp full screen window which tells me that windows is
    installing updates ( 1 of 1 )
and that i should not switch off or restart.
unfortunately this screen can stay for 12/15 hours making my pc
unusable and i therefore have no choice but to switch off using the
button on the front of the pc which i understand is not recommended.

how can this be avoided ?

I think if you go to Windows Update on the Internet, and install all
updates, it should clear the 'pending' updates from your system allowing it
    to shut down correctly.

There should be a little yello "shield" in your tray near the clock. If not,
uncheck "hide unused tray items" in your taskbar preferences menu.
Click on the yellow thingie and tell it to install updates. Use "custom" so
you see what it installs and where it might hang.
If you see where it hangs, go to the windows update site and try to update
it from there. If it stalls again, check "hide this update" and do further
    research.
