Windows vs Windows Mobile

Discussion in 'NZ Computing' started by Lawrence D'Oliveiro, Jul 31, 2009.

  1. The division between traditional PCs (including notebooks) and more limited-
function mobile devices (like smartphones and the now-defunct PDAs) has
played nicely into Microsoft's hands up until recently. The former has been
almost exclusively based around the x86 architecture for a long while now,
while the latter has not, but that's OK, because while regular Windows (for
the former market) is x86-centric, Windows Mobile (for the latter) is a bit
more portable. And a bit more limited.

But now, the boundaries are starting to blur, to the point where x86-
centricity is moving from being an asset to being a liability. Can Microsoft
and its ISVs move to adapt? Past experience says no: in its early days,
Windows NT was a portable architecture, but the sheer cost of maintaining
that put off ISVs from offering much support for non-x86 versions of their
software, and Microsoft itself soon lost interest.

But now, non-x86 devices are encroaching into x86 territory. But Microsoft's
costs are, if anything, even higher than before. So what can it do to stay
    on top?
