What updates e-mailed to your inbox?

Microsoft does NOT send updates by email. You've been had by a virus.

Turning off Norton will not get Windows updates into your mail inbox.

    What are you rambling about?
First point being that MS no longer support 98/98se with updates!
Also worth mentioning is that Nortons is auto-configured to allow
updates regardless of OS, so NO need to disable! And totally unwise
as well, and as for your bogus claim that it was "recommended" to
Turn off Nortons - who told you that? - Definately NOT symantec.

Whilst it's true that Microsoft don't send the actual patches by email, if
you sign up for them, Microsoft can and do send advisory emails out to you
(containing links to the download pages) when new patches become available.

Really? According to the Microsoft Security site patches will continue to be
provided, but only for critical security-related issues. For example, have a
look at the FAQ section on this bulletin...
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS05-020.mspx

    <quote>

Are Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, or Windows Millennium Edition
critically affected by one or more of the vulnerabilities that are addressed
    in this security bulletin?

Yes. Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Millennium Edition
are critically affected by the vulnerabilities that are addressed in this
security bulletin. Critical security updates for these platforms are
available, are provided as part of this security bulletin, and can be
downloaded only from the Windows Update Web site. For more information about
severity ratings, visit the following Web site.
