Windows Explorer behavior in XP Pro

Two questions about Win XP Pro:

    1) I have noticed that in XP Pro when I have the explorer bar set to
folders (the usual behavior), it expands the folder tree when ever I
click on a folder. I don't want it to do that.

    2) Also, I would like to rename files by simply clicking on them, just
like in the content pane (on the right side). - You know, you click on
a file, wait a couple of seconds, then click again, and rename the
file. That doesn't work in the explorer bar (on the left hand side of
    the window)

I've poked around in the settings, and I don't know how to change the
two things. Any ideas out there? Also, if there is a more appropriate
newsgroup to post this question on, please let me know.

That's the whole point of the FOLDERS list - it lists the FOLDERS.

Best option, right-click on the folder, select Rename.

Unless you feel like writing your very own OS, you're out of luck. It is
    what it is...
