I have a WinXP Home SP2 Machine that refused any login attempts (there
was no pw on the system) so I used EBCD to reset the password to * (no
password). It will acccept the password now, though it logs in,
flashes the wallpaper for a second then logs out right away. Safe
    mode doesn't help.

    Any ideas?

    Opinions personal, facts suspect.
