    When my 98 PC starts I get an explorer.exe error where it has performed an
    illegal operation. If I click close I get a blue screen which does not do
    anything. If I restart I get exactly the same. If I click details I get
    the following;

    Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module explorer.exe at
    0l5f:0040lf3l
    Registers:
    eax=00000000 cs=0l5f eip=0040lf3l eflgf=000l0246

    This PC runs AVG7.0 which is upto date as of yesterday PM. No virus was
    detected before shutdown.

    Boot to floppy and run scanreg /restore at the command prompt.
    Choose date prior to the problem.
    If you need a W98 boot disk, get it from bootdisk.com

    Invalid page faults are usually caused by two programs trying to
    access the same memory address either real or Virtual.
    Trim your startup group as there may be a program you are running in
    the taskbar that doesn't need to be there that may be causing it,

    http://www.geocities.com/sheppola/startup.html
    http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_full.htm
    and or a background program causing it.
    you may also have remnants of the swen worm so,

    Anti_virus/Trojan free
    http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php
    and also,"Spybot",
    http://security.kolla.de/
    But also from time to time do an online AVS(Anti-Virus Scan)
    http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/
    and ATS(Anti Trojan Scan),

    HTH :)
