Why They're Called "M$"

  1. When Microsoft brought out its "Software Assurance" scheme six years ago, it
    claimed that most companies would save money by opting in. The idea was,
    they agreed to pay a regular sum of money to Microsoft, in return for
    automatic access to major new upgrades as they came along.

    Of course, we all know what happened: Microsoft fell rather spectacularly
    behind in actually delivering those promised new upgrades to its software.
    With the result that many of those of its customers who paid for "Software
    Assurance" are left feeling rather like suckers.

    Here's an item on a Forrester Research report
    <http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/07/09/Microsoft-customers-sour-on-Software-Assurance_1.html>
    which details what happened, and the increased costs to customers. The only
    surprising thing, to me, is that the proportion who are giving up on
    Software Assurance isn't higher.

    Here's a commentary from Microsoft Watch
    <http://www.microsoft-watch.com/content/operating_systems/software_assurance_storm_warning.html>
    on the Forrester report, predicting wider customer unrest to come.

    And of course Microsoft took exception to the report, producing a
    predictably content-free PR response
