it won't pick up the hard disk although its powered up - the bios
screen comes up OK then (like mine does ) goes off then the WELCOME
screen in XP should come up - his doesn't -anyone got any help as to

Go into the BIOS setup information and use the "automatically detect
hard drives" function. Does that find the hard drive?

Set all of the hard drive types to "auto" if they are not already set
    there.

Double check the power and data cables for the hard drive. Make sure
the data cable is connected to the primary IDE connector on the
motherboard and that the edge of the cable with the red stripe is
connected to pin 1 on both ends. The motherboard end will be marked.
On the hard drive pin 1 is the edge closest to the power connector.

    Good luck
