I am wanting to put together a linux news server maybe on an old HP system.
What linux group should i post in for getting nice friendly help? What i
want is to be able to chat live in aim with someone while they could help me
    out in real time.

Have a look at grc.techtalk.linux. Seems to be a bunch of helpful people.
Don't know about the aim thing.
