Mapping a drive letter typically means to assign a drive letter to a remote
shared network resource, so the local machine can treat that remote resource
more like a local resource. For example, computer "X" has one of it's
folders shared to the network. Computer "Y" is also connected to the
network, and can access Computer X's shared folder, but it exists as a
lengthy network pathname, and may not be easily or conveniently accessable
to some programs in that manner. So, a solution would be for Computer "Y" to
"map" the folder to a drive letter, which just means that it assigns a
letter designation to the folder just like it's local drives.
