What is IOMega Active Disk as pertains to thumb drives?

Im in market for a flash memory thumb drive.

Came across IOMega's thumb drives and they tout something called
"Active Disk" that will allow me to run apps right off the thumb drive
    itself.

How is this different or better than other brand flash thumb drives
    that don't use Active Disk?

Can't I run some apps off any thumb drive anyway without the need for
    Active Disk?

    Advice?
