    hello,

i use win 98 - 4.10.1998. recently when i turn on the machine (intel pentium
II 400mhz) it wants a password. i click cancel and it goes to my desktop.
    never did that before.

then all is fine until i try to shut down. i use a progran called "Window
Washer" that used to kick in when i clicked "shutdown." it did its thing
and then shutdown the computer and monitor for me. now i get the darn
message about "it is now safe..... ." so i have to sit and wait for it. i
used to walk away and it shut itself down for me.

AND when i walk away for a just a few minutes the thing goes into "standby"
mode and i have to hit a key to get back to the desktop. i never noticed a
"standby" option before in the "shut down windows" box. maybe it was there
and i never noticed it. not sure.

norton anti-virus is in the systray and always running as is zone alarm, a
popup stopper, and sometimes a kodak (camera) easyshare program.

these have been in the systray for a long time now. the only changes i made
before these things started happening were a switch from dial-up to dsl
(wish i did that a long time ago) and i tried to add a usb hub and it caused
all kinds of problems (it was a radioshack 4 port hub with it's own power
supply - cost $20 - could not get it to do the job so i removed it) it was
just about then that the problems arose.

    how can i:

    1. lose this "sign on" with a password thing?

    2. get it to shutdown the monitor and everything else when Window Washer is
done its cycle (the way it used to)?

    3. get rid of this "standby" mode?

thank you for reading this. i know it was long but i wanted to supply as
much info as i could to give you folks a complete picture.

How to Manually Restore the Windows 98/Me Registry
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=221512

Press and hold down the "Control" key during bootup until
the Boot Menu appears, then select "5. Command prompt only".
At the DOS prompt type "scanreg /restore" (Note the space)
(You may need to type "cd c:\windows\command" if you get "bad command")
Scan through the list and see if there's a date available when all was
working correctly. If yes, restore that one, reboot.
