  1. Hey guys,

My netbackup software has been failing on all 4 x64 servers I put into
production. After working with Symantec, we've determined that VSS is the
    culprit.

Using ntbackup, I tried to do a system state backup on the servers and they
failed. Here is the report from the ntbackup job:

    Backup Status
    Operation: Backup
    Active backup destination: File
Media name: "Backup.bkf created 8/15/2007 at 1:25 PM"

Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 1.
    Timeout before function completed

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy: 0xffffffff.

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:ffffffff
    Aborting Backup.

    ----------------------

The operation did not successfully complete.

    ----------------------

    Backup Status
    Operation: Backup
    Active backup destination: File
Media name: "Backup.bkf created 8/15/2007 at 1:30 PM"

Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 1.
    Timeout before function completed

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy: 0xffffffff.

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:ffffffff
    Aborting Backup.

In addition, when the netbackup job attempts a backup, it fails and turns
off the VSS service on the servers. Here is the error log that it generates:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: VSS
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 12302
    Date: 8/15/2007
    Time: 11:52:25 AM
    User: N/A
    Computer: CCPS-GBIIS1
    Description:
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: An internal inconsistency was detected in
trying to contact shadow copy service writers. Please check to see that the
Event Service and Volume Shadow Copy Service are operating properly.
