Vivid Processing?

I always used Vivid mode on my Canon S410 and thought that all it did was
increase the color saturation slightly. Now with my new Panasonic TZ1 vivid
mode seems even more vivid. Along with very slight increased saturation they
seem to be doing some edge sharpening that makes the photos look almost 3D.
I like it and expect to continue to use this mode.

Can someone tell me what is going on with Vivid Processing? Can this be done
    in post processing? How?

    Thanks,

    NM
