I carry a 1 Gig USB key (Apacer AH320) on my keychain, with software
updates (AV, firewall, browsers, etc, and a few utilities to help fix
other people's computers). This USB key has had relatively little use
but when I went to update some of the software the other day the USB
key was dead, no light, no response from my DVD player either. There
was no visible sign of damage, the cap was always in place.

I had thought USB keys were near bullet proof. Anyone else had one
    die?

    Yep, I've had 2 die.
    And I've killed 1
(Front USB port was connected to the Firewire header on the motherboard)

FWIW I test each new one with HD Tune for any signs of poor performance.

    Best
    Paul.
