In my Wireless box I have a padlock symbol under Security next to my
linksys. What does this mean? Do I need it? If not, how can I get rid of it?

    Secured Network

It means you have password protected your access point (wep/wap/wpa-psk/wpa2, etc.), you cannot get rid of it without unsecuring you network...live with it or share your net (and files if they try real hard.), with the general public.
