Universities are pathetic. Do they even teach pratical skills topeople these days?

A co-worker of mine whom has a degree in computing at Auckland
University can't even install a cd-rom drive for fucks sake. A fucking
cd-rom drive! We aren't talking about building a new system from scratch
    here.

I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that degrees mean slightly less
than the semen stains on Breens arsehole. Uni's just hand out fucking
text books, get these cretins to read them, and then test them on
fucking paper. What the HELL is the point of that shit? Do fucking
plumbers only do their tests on paper? Does a doctor only read about
disease and never attend pratical classes? Shit, I hope not. So why the
hell are computing graduates leaving our universities without even
knowing how the hell to install things such as floppies or cd-roms? Or
    make boot disks.

Shove those fucking degrees up your arses and use your hands you bulbous
    bunch of sanctimonious lepers.

These with such degrees are supposedly today's "bright young things",
though normally barely literate or even minimally socialised.

On the other hand, why might it require a degree for anything to do
with dreary computers and hardware installation? It's so utterly
    routine as to be laughable.

Universities are not *supposed* to teach practical skills - and this is
where the tertiary education system is so horribly broken. Universities
should be about laying a solid theoretical foundation for a career in
.... whatever. Not changing cd-rom's, as it turns out. Polytech's were
supposed to be about teaching skills and an apprenticeship was about
gaining those skills from someone who knew WTF they were talking about.

Somewhere along the line it became "common knowledge" that a University
degree was a "better" one. They had harder input criteria, for a good
reason, and hence a University education was regarded as a sign of being
.... well ... educated. Like wot I is. Consequently, and unsurprisingly
lots of people started wanting University degrees and competition formed
between the Universities to increase their rolls - because that's how
    they got funded.

We got lots of crap like this from it: http://www.cynicalbastards.com/ubs/

In the middle of this competition for students the Universities sussed
that if they started advertising that their courses taught practical
skills as well as the theoretical stuff, then students would take this
to mean they'd get a job upon leaving. Not such a bad competitive
    advantage, eh?

The Polytech's got fucked over, and apprenticeships became associated
with coal mines, ship yards and the eighteenth century. Which is a
    shame, really.

Oh no, a degree is a valuable document. In England a degree means that
you managed to go out drinking damn nearly every night for three years.
In New Zealand, where the academic environment is obviously
significantly tougher, I understand that this period of time is more
commonly five years and reasonably often drags out to six or seven.

Jesus! Seven years on the piss!

It's also a certificate of entering your working life already in
significant quantities of debt. So, obviously, we build our society
around virtually *needing* one in order to get anywhere.

D'you know the funny part? There are people who are genuinely amazed
that lots of successful businesses are run by early school leavers.

    > Uni's just hand out fucking
    > text books, get these cretins to read them, and then test them on

Yup. There are some things called lectures too, where some people who
failed to leave university stand up and summarise the book a chapter at
    a time.

    > Do fucking
    > plumbers only do their tests on paper?

No, they have apprenticeships. Or learn at Polytech.

    > Does a doctor only read about
    > disease and never attend pratical classes? Shit, I hope not.

Doctors are made to work in several different areas of the industry
before being allowed to even think about working alone. It's a bloody
good idea, and the sooner IT starts to turn itself from a bunch of
cowboys into a profession, the better it will be for all concerned.

    I know what you mean.
I know of a couple of 'paper' qualified people that knew their shit if it
    was in the book.
Give them a problem that wasn't in the book and they were totally lost.

I am of the opposite mould - all the practicable experience and not enough
paper qualifications - even though I have done over 80 exams in the last 2
years covering laptops, desktops, servers, SCSI disk arrays & robotic tape
libraries, fibre channel SAN's etc. A+ - no such thing when I started.
Had a laser printer course where the instructor called me back in on the
second course to tell him where a bracket went - mind you he even offered me
a job (didn't take it - tempting to goto gold coast though).

Seen a few sys-admins in that mould. Doesn't work so it must be a hardware
    fault!!

Why do you think a degree in computing should teach someone to install a
cd-rom drive? Perhaps your point is that this person is stupid, and
shouldn't have a degree. That could well be true, but inability to
install a cd-rom drive (childs play to me, and to you presumably) does
not by itself imply lack of intelligence. Many very intelligent and
creative people are hopeless with hardware of any kind. I bet Einstein
didn't know how to change his sparkplugs - he probably didn't even know
    how to drive.

I think a lot of people do computer science these days who are just
reasonably brainy. They have the academic "smarts" and these days
there'll be a decent job (in IT) at the end of it, so it's a good
career option even though they don't necessarily have any greater
interest in - or facility with - computers, in the computer-nerd
    sense, as anybody else.

It's the same as how computers today are owned by absolutely anybody
whereas pre-internet they were only owned by "geeks" who had a natural
interest in and talent for them.

Basically, being degree qualified today in computing doesn't mean you
have a technical facility with computers generally. It was perhaps
likely to mean that some years ago when it was only "geeks" who had
    any interest in them.

University computer science degrees incorporate a large theoretical
component and don't even go very near hardware.

You don't need to to Uni for that.

At Uni you learn to write the firmware on the chips in the CD drive.

Installing it is for $5/hour techs who dropped out of high school to get

University does have some practical work, for medicine, for science.. though

Which is why it shouldn't be reduced to that level. My husband's
degree is in Engineering, with a focus on Computer Science. His
degrees are actually useful (and he can install a drive). Narrowing
the focus too much is not a good thing.

Uni does teach you how to install CD-ROM drive, Tech or an A+ training
school do that. Like an architect doesn't have to know how to lay carpet.
Uni teach you how to do programming, completely different role. You don't
expect someone who can install a CD-ROM drive to write the new version of
    Nero.
