under ms-dos Install 64Bit system

Discussion in 'Windows 64bit' started by =?Utf-8?B?TXU=?=, Sep 14, 2005.

  1. Hi,
I got a 64bit WindowsXP disk and I try to install under MS-dos mode, but I
can not find winnt.exe file under \i386 folder.
Would you tell me how to install 64bit windows under ms-dos mode?
    Thank a lot!

  2. Are you referring to the text based setup portion of Windows XP Professional
    x64?

If you have the Windows XP Professional x64 CD you do not run anything
from either MS-DOS mode or Windows 32-bit. You boot the computer with
the CD and the setup will run automatically. The Win x64 is strictly
64-bit and will not run in 32-bit and does not run in MS-DOS.

  4. Rick, I think what is confusing Mu is the blue text based setup that looks
DOS Based, but its actually not.

You may be right, Andre. I hadn't thought about that.

  6. I'm not sure, though. He's actually searching for an *.EXE on the disk.

  7. it's in \amd64, of course. ;)

But you really need to run the installation from a bootable CD.

  8. Hello Mu,
There is no way to start setup from MS-DOS. There is no winnt.exe or
replacement for running setup from MS_DOS
Boot from cd or run Winnt32 from inside a 32-bit OS are the ways to run
    setup.
    Thanks,

  11. Hello Charlie,
Too nice to me I was wrong,
Run winnt32.exe from inside a 64-bit OS is what I meant to type.
It's a 64-bit Exe so it will not run inside a 32-bit OS

  13. Ah, but it will run from within x64 WinPE. Or from an existing x64 Windows.
So it's still useful. Just not a way to install the OS, unfortunately, from
    within 32-bit Windows.

  14. This requires using RIS. Your best bet for discussing how to set up a RIS
server to deploy XP images, either 32-bit or 64-bit, is one of the
microsoft.public.windows.server newsgroups, possibly the setup one. Or
    google Remote Installation Service.
