Unable to detect cd-rom in bios

    I had an older system with 40 gb hdd, amd processor, when i try reinstall my os bios doesn't recognise cdrom.(it not fixed on the system an external ide drive).. but before 4 or 5 months back i had replaced the os, there no probs on that time....... when i conected the drive with the end terminal whic has conected to Hdd the bios detects the drive......
    now i has to recognise the drive with seprate cable ,,,, what to do
