Thsi weekend I installed Thunderbird (1.5.0.8) and ditched OE at the
    same time.

Q1- When i'm reading newsgroup messages - OE had an option 'Refresh' to
upload any new messages while still in the newsgroup. How do I do this
    in TB?

Q2- I imported all my emails to TB. I am trying the new luxury of
threaded messages (View > Sort by > 'Threaded') but I sometimes get some
strange 'clusterings'. The latest is a bunch of old emails (from 2002)
appearing at the top of an otherwise Date ordered (descending order)
    group of emails.

Are there known issues with 'threaded' messages?

    Thanks for any pointers.

Use the Get New Messages icon on the toolbar while in the newsgroup
