Don't enable java if you browse www.trademe.co.nz or it will start reporting
    to redsheriff.com.
If you don't believe it look at the source code when browsing their pages.

That would be Javascript you're wanting people to turn off then. Java !=
    Javascript ;)

A lot of sites use Javascript tracking like this. There are many other
stats applications like DeepMetrix that use Javascript to write out
    code into the page.

Why they don't just install decent log parsing software on their servers
is beyond me. One of the biggest problems with Javascript that reports
back to another server server via means of invisible images (and things
like Google adsense for that matter as well) is that if the server
can't be reached it can slow down the page load/display time
    considerably.

If you dont want IMR aka red Sherif you will need to avoid most major
web sites in NZ and world wide.
TM declare the use of tracking tech on there pages just have a look
    around it is there.

It is relatively harmless although the cross sites nature it is
    developing is a bit concerning.

    a) It's JavaScript, as someone else pointed out.
    b) Do you actually KNOW what RedSheriff is? It's a page-hits monitoring
company. ALL that they do is count page views. It's nothing nefarious.
Doing the counting in JS is kinda stupid, though.

Hi, I believe Red Sheriff is the NZ "standard" web rating system for
sites. It is a indepenent (at least if you pay for it) sytem for
tracking the popularity of sites. i.e. it counts page hits. Much as I
may hate such things many commercial sites would see it at something
necesary so they appear in published ratings.
