The use of NETBIOS over TCP/IP

  1. Hi I wonder what is the use of NETBIOS over TCP/IP.
Isn't that it is used only to support older version of Windows O/S such as
WinNT and Win 95, 98. However in the book Windows 2000 Server 70-215. It
    says

"If NETBIOS over TCP/IP is disabled, Windows 200 unable to determine which
computer ou loggon from and thus can't restrict users to loggon to specific
computers. It is because restriction on computer use computer name rather
    than Message Authentication Code Address"
