The TRUTH about Bullwinkle's Bug

Discussion in 'DVD Video' started by Captain Infinity, Aug 19, 2003.

  1. OK, so I buy the Rocky and Bullwinkle DVD set, and I am much afeared.

I have heard so many stories about BUGS TAKING OVER THE WORLD!

    Here's the scoop:

At the beginning of each R&B episode, a translucent "R&B" appears in the
lower right corner of the screen. It's about 1/100 of the screen size,
which is to say you could fit at least 100 of these on the total screen.

IOW, it's almost invisible. Translucent. Tiny. A "watermark".

And, horror of horrors, it DISAPPEARS AFTER 15 SECONDS!!

JUMPING JESUS ON A TRAMPOLINE, WHAT IS THE WORLD COMING TO?? It's the
end of DVD's as we know it! Everybody, write to your congressman! Call
out the Marines! OUR WAY OF LIFE IS THREATENED!

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to send a letter to the President because
I just heard the Men In Black are putting Dihydrogen Monoxide* in our
local reservoirs. AUGH! I'LL ONLY DRINK BEER FROM NOW ON!!

Excuse me, Cap., but we pay for the friggin' DVD's (unlike the broadcast
nets, which are advertiser supported), so we should NOT be subjected to
ads, bugs, or anything else of that ilk.

BOYCOTT THE BUGGERS UNTIL THEY GIVE US WHAT THE PURCAHSERS WANT!!!

No sh*t? Hell, these people made it seem as if it were a pulsating
blue and red logo that was continuously on the screen. Thanks for
this, now I *really* have no objections to getting the set.

Dude- I got *bad* news for ya- I hear Dihydrogen Monoxide is in
most beer, too- even the imported stuff!

I'm not bugged by the bug, much, either. What bothered me about the set was
that they took the trouble to insert a new title into the beginning of each
episode. I understand that the original episodes were called "Rocky and His
Friends." But the DVD has a brand new title sequence (of a few seconds)
naming it "The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle." What is the purpose,
exactly, of renaming something that is being archived into a DVD boxset? Is
there something about the specially produced new title that will increase
    our enjoyment of the program?

This kind of thinking is so very destructive. People keep posting about
how the rest of the DVD is full of great features, it's great having the
episodes, etc. So why did they have to ruin it with a bug? Moreso, why
should we settle for a bug? If you say you won't buy it, the bug
disappears, and then it really is a great purchase.

Hmm, someone else said it disappeared 'after a second'.

This isn't something I was going to buy.. (I *may* rent it eventually to see
every episode, but then I'm still implicitly supporting the bugs..)

But I hope the people who are boycotting this for the bug *tell* the producer
and/or the store they would have bought it from _why_ they aren't buying it.
Otherwise, they just think the demand wasn't as great as they had expected.

I, also, am annoyed by the new title card (which is all it is, not a new
sequence, just a card that replaces the original title). I'm also
annoyed with the fact that they're using the second season program
opening on first season episodes. This is an actual *change in content*
of the original episode. HARUMPH! I SAY, HARUMPH!

But on the other hand, damn, this is a great show.

They didn't. The bug ruins nothing. Except the mood of people who have
    a bug up their butts.

I can watch (or record) RandB on TV for free with the bug... if I pay for
the DVD set, I don't want the bug... it's a matter of choice... I choose to
boycott... after all, if they do it to RandB they will do it to all the
DVDs... and I can't stand them on the TV let alone the DVDs that I PAY
    FOR... just my humble opinion.

If I find a rabbit turd in my bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios, I am
not for one moment consoled by the thought it's a small thing, easily
overlooked in an otherwise fine bowl.

What benefit does the bug offer the consumer? None.

If I bought the DVD set, have I paid to see the program? Yes.
Have I paid to have any portion of the program obscured by some idiot
    marketing student's bright ideas? No.

Finally, watch. A ``small, translucent, transient'' bug today
will become something even more annoying than TNN comes up with within
five years, unless it's made clear this is unacceptable. Why don't you
want me to watch what I actually would pay to watch?

Thing is, I don't even understand why the bug is there in the first
place. What benefit does the bug offer the manufacturer/producer?
None. It says, "R&B". Oh, so I know it's Rocky and Bullwinkle...?
it's not like it's advertising or anything, it's just a mark that AT
BEST is inconsequential and at worst is annoying. So why do it other
than to test the public's tolerance for bugs on DVDs?

I'm not trolling, I just think all the hysterics over a 15-second
translucent bug is rather ridiculous, given the quality of the R&B set.
IMO, no one should refuse to buy this set if they like Rocky &
    Bullwinkle. These DVD's are superb.

The episode of R&B that are shown on broadcast are edited. Chunks are
missing, including all the bumpers for the commercials. AND also but
plus, all the "Watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat" bits are GONE on
    broadcast.

Another case of "you get what you pay for".

There's something of an explanation on Jerry Beck's Cartoon Research
website about this, saying that there's a very complicated relationship
between the broadcast rights to Rocky and Bullwinkle (which are owned by
Universal Television, apparently) and the video rights, which have changed
hands a few times, going from Buena Vista to Sony Wonder most recently.

The bug is likely a legal obligation required by Universal to ensure that
no one broadcasts the episodes using the DVDs as source material. It's not
an ideal situation, but it's probably the only way R&B can surface on home
video at this point (it also explains why the titles of the show have been
    altered for the disc).

Before everyone gets all paranoid, it should be noted that all signs point
to the bug being a necessary evil due to the murky world of licensing
material from the pre-home video days. The discrepancy between who owns
broadcast rights and who owns video rights, the sort of thing that gets
settled way in advance with shows produced these days, has been named as
the culprit (www.cartoonresearch.com). It's either a 15-second bug, or no
R&B DVD set. Who knows, maybe even General Mills (the show's
original sponsor and possibly another key player in the Bullwinkle
    copyright tangle) is involved.
