Synchronize to a Win2K NTP server

    Hi there,

    did anyone manage to synchronize a Cisco PIX to NTP server where NTP is
    provided by a Win2K server?

    I have had problems with cisco switches (cat 2950)
    which seem actually to use SNTP.

    The Windows server seemed to be broken.
    I tested a different NTP server for Windows
    (binary on internet) which worked well enough
    for me. Details below.

    I wrote the following some years ago for internal use.

    Windows 2000 Simple Network Time Protocol (SNTP) server seems to be
    broken.

    "The Windows Time Synchronization service (W32Time) is a fully
    compliant
    implementation of the Simple Network Time Protocol (SNTP) as detailed
    in IETF RFC 1769."


    This protocol is supposed to be backwards compatible with the increased

    functionality that the full version or NTP offers however I have found
    that Cisco NTP clients [NOT SNTP] (various platforms) cannot
    synchronise
    with a Windows 2000 SNTP server reliably.

    I have done debugs on the cisco equipment and suspect that the issue
    MAY be due to the following:-

    RFC 1769 (SNTP) says:

    Root Dispersion field can be set to a value corresponding to the

    What actually seems to occur is that the Windows 2000 SNTP server
    returns to
    the client whatever it receives in the root dispersion field. For some
    reason the Cisco often sends large values. When these large values are
    echoed back to the Cisco it chucks away the apparently invalid/useless
    response. I do not fully understand NTP (it seems pretty complex to me)
    but I think that I may be close enough.


    The (lengthy) evidence follows along with an article from c
    omp.protocols.time.ntp that I wish that I had found earlier.

    I have also demonstrated successful synchronisation with another NTP
    server (on the same Windows 2000 PC).

    The NTP server came from http://www.meinberg.de/english/sw/ntp.htm as
    ntp4171.zip. There was some trouble getting it installed but it
    mysteriously finally worked.

    Observe the "reach" bitmap which is in Octal and sets a bit for
    every
    valid ntp response received. Goes 1, 3, 7, 17, oops missed one 36,
    75, . . .

    Note that the rtdsp (Root Dispersion) value is NOT set to zero by the
    NT
    box and that the Cisco ignores all of the incoming packets (the NTP
    process
    seems to decide that they are invalid and leaves the relevant
    "reach"
    bit at zero).

    NT is a poor platform for time servers, as it doesn't have adequate
    clock resolution.

    More importantly, you still need to install a third party NTP
    implementation. Windows 2000 comes with something that purports to
    implement SNTP, not NTP, but implements that incorrectly. It doesn't
    claim to be an NTP server and it is not actually an SNTP server.
    (Last verified for SP2.)

    If you want to synchronise non-Windows machines to this, you should
    ask Microsoft for advice. (They will probably give no advice, except
    possibly to use Windows instead of Unix!) The protocol is essentially
    proprietory and incorrectly documented.

    You can use ntpdate from the proper NTP package. However, many Unixes
    already have proper NTP support, which just needs to be enabled
    and pointed at a valid implementation. They will probably fail to
    synchronise to Windows 2000 time server. As I understand the bugs in
    the Windows 2000 timeserver, neither will synchronise unless the Unix
    box has recently synchronised to a valid source, and then the fact that
    they will synchronise is due to a bug in the Win2K implmentation.
    (ntpdate will probably never synchronise).
