at a customer site there is a 4503 that has a sup engine with 2 Gbic's
labeled as uplink1 and uplink2. Can these be used? I couldn't get them to
    work.

Slot 3 on the 4503 has a 2 Gbic card, these I got to work.

Customer wants to be able to use the Gbic's on the sup engine.

Also, how do you assign an ip address to the 4503 to allow remote access
    for maintanance?

    TIA

    For management try...

    Interface Vlan1
    ip address a.b.c.d e.f.g.h
    no shut

for the supervisor ports if you are trunking look for otherwise change
    the appropriate keywords.

    interface GigabitEthernet1/1
    switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
    switchport mode trunk
    !
    interface GigabitEthernet1/2
    switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
    switchport mode trunk
