Stop ThunderBird From Opening Next Message

It seems like it should be an obvious option, but I can't figure out
how to get TB to stop opening the next message (read or unread) after
    deleting the current message.

    - Open an email message in its own window
    - Select delete ('X') from the toolbar
    - The next message in the folder is opened in its own window

I am amazed that this is the default behavior.

Believe it or not, its the way most people work

In any case you can change the behaviour with
    Unselect Message
