Sony DSC-V1 -- using a non-Sony flash

Discussion in 'Digital Photography' started by Norman Swartz, Dec 10, 2003.

  1. My Sony DSC-V1 has a five-contact hot-shoe. The manual says that it may be
possible to use a non-Sony flash on this camera but also warns that the
camera or flash may 'malfunction'. I have a Canon 420EX flash. By careful
measurement I can see that three of the five pins on the flash will touch
three of the five contacts on the hot-shoe. I am sure that I will lose
some of the functionality of the flash (perhaps-through-the-lens-metering
of the flash). But the more important issue is whether I dare try the
experiment. Is there any real danger to the camera or flash if I mount the
flash on the camera and turn on both? Does anyone of you have any
experience with this combination? Are there any rules of thumb as to what
combinations are safe?; likely to work?; likely not to work? Thanks.
