"S.M.A.R.T status bad" back up your data = message on monitor when
power to my comp turned on. Comp will not boot. Looks like HD is
damaged. Is there any hope to recover my data from the HD?

Best you'll get is a very firm definite 'maybe'.

Your best courses of action is to either Boot of a Linux CD or mount the
drive in another PC and see if the drives contents can be seen (& saved)
    that way.

If this is not successfull 'do not' try to run any repair programs on the
drive if the data is at all valuable.
In this case take the drive to a recovery specialist.
Attempting to 'repair' the drive yourself will only corrupt the data and
make recovery more expensive 'if at all possible'

On the other hand if the data is not that valuable google 'data recovery'
for trial and freeware apps to try.

    Best
    Paul.
