To make it brief, running XP on an eMachine. Upgraded RAM to an additional
256MB. Machine requires DDR type at 133 MHz. Added same, now machine is
    running super slow.

Was told by an "expert" that it was the wrong type of RAM, and was
conflicting wiith the original RAM. Removed new RAM stick, restored default
settings and machine is running worse.

Ran virus scans & Adaware & Spybot. Turned up nothing unusual.

    Any ideas?

    check your bios settings
they may have gone back to the original defaults...
there usually is a setting for maximum performance (or something similar)
