Simply, the CF card shows up when I plug this little thing directly
into the USB port without using the supplied female-male USB cable,
but when I use the cable the card doesn't show up. Am I missing
something, or is it just a bad cable?

I use mine without the cable when downloading to a laptop and with the cable
when downloading to my desktop and it works both ways.

Can you still do transfers with the cable once you plug in a card or is it
    ignored?
