is there a way to automate a config of wireless using a specific wpa
psk? i would like to give guests a usb key with an executable to
configure their wireless instead of manually kludging around with it.

Try the Wireless Network Setup Wizard. It is only good for WinXP SP2 but
you can use a flash drive to store network settings. It is in the Help and
Support area and there is an article on the Microsoft site that explains it,
    sorry I don't know where.
