No! I've used Ad-Aware for several years to good effect. Judging from
the frequent comments here ( I've no personal experience of Norton
products - being warned off!), I suspect Ad-Aware is trying to remove
    Norton buggy bits!

No. They provide an excellent product, for free. It might tell you something
    about the Norton product.

It may be that your description of "heavily infested" is somewhat
    exaggerated, of course.

Yes. But occasionally some stuff that Nortons misses.

NEVER EVER DOWNLOAD things like adaware/Spybot from any place
but the original home site (EVER!!!)
    Hm, i should stop shouting.
It is a very neat hack to hide some shit in something
    reputable.
So I always google for pros and cons about a package,
and when I am convinced of the integrity of pack and site,
I download it from as close as possible to to home site.
Then if you find you are contaminated with al sorts of
    trash, start removing it.
When in doubt, google for the name of some suspected
malware, before you try to remove it.
Often a site like Macafee has a spacial removal program
to get rid of the nasty ones.

The product reports a lot of stuff that nortons dosnt bother with. Nortons
dosnt bother with it because it is benign stuff like cookies from sites with
    dodgie activities etc.

On a whole the only purpose served by adaware is to give a user a fright then a
    warm fuzzy feeling

I'd trust Ad-Aware LONG before I'd trust anything with "Norton" in the name.

Not unless it's Symantec with the gimmick. They're good at that. They're not
very good at AV or spyware detection, though. Or writing software, period. Now,
    please stop crossposting this crap.

The AdAware Personal Edition is totally free, including all updates,
so the obvious answer is "impossible" because ther is *NO SALE*.
And it is *not* "anti-virus" software, and perhaps the Norton
software you have is not anti-adware.

Since i have never seen a Norton anti-virus program that worked as
advertised, i would tend to agree with you.

    No. think about it

ad aware is highly regarded.. As is spybot S&D and others.

    ad-aware detects Adware and spyware.

    an anti virus detects viruses..

    a trojan detector detects trojans.

Maybe some antivirus sw detects spyware, and most detect trojans to an
    extent. But it doesn't specialise.

I don't believe so - you will find that different adware programs catch
different adware. I use Adaware all the time and it does a great job.

Err - No. It just means that Norton is a total crock of shite and
    lies like a rug.

AdAware SE is one of the better programs out there for cleaning.

Norton - if it wasn't sold as a security program, but was only
downloaded, it'd be classified as a virus pretty darn quick!

I have to say I agree. I removed Norton after two years because it was
slowing my whole PC down and getting into everything. It took hours to
completely uninstall and when I moved to a quality product like Avast
and also Adaware, combined with Spybot... everything works faster and I
    get better protection.

I eventually had to get rid of all Norton products (*long* after I should
have) because of problems they caused. AVG has not caused any problems for
me. That said, are you confusing Norton AV -- which looks for viruses --
with AdAware -- which looks for spyware? I am guessing that the two
products could be honing in on completely separate problems.
