    Hi there

does anyone know some good websites with reviews of digital cameras? I'm
looking at getting something simple and cheap, like an "Olympus Camedia
C-770 Ultra Zoom" or a "Konica Minolta Dimage Z3", and would like to read
    opinions and comparisons.

    Thanks,
    Peter

    Hi

Go to http://www.dcviews.co.uk/cameras.htm and select the make and model you
want, the page will then provide links to most of the 'big' sites on the web
with reviews of your chosen camera.

dcresource.com has better reviews than dpreview.com or stevesdigicams.com.

    C-770:
    http://dcresource.com/reviews/olympus/c765uz_770uz-review/index.shtml

    Z3:
    http://dcresource.com/reviews/minolta/dimage_z3-review/index.shtml

Neither of these models are that great. For that price range, $350-400,
the Panasonic FZ15 is much better, and for $100 more the FZ20 is 5Mp
    versus 4Mp.

NEVER buy a digital camera that lacks an AF-Assist lamp.

Thanks, for the advice (and thanks to all the other replies too). Does the
fact that I don't know what an "AF-assist lamp" is, mean that it is
irrelevant for me (and maybe I should just go for a cheaper, simpler
    model)?

It is auto-focus assist. The reason for it, is in a low light
environment, the camera can't focus with the existing light, even though
when the flash goes off there is sufficient illumination for the picutre.

Canon put AF assist on most models, even down to the 2 megapixel A60.
It's now a drop-dead requirement for all mid-range to high end cameras.
I.e., the Panasonic FZ-10 didn't have it, but Panasonic added it to the
    FZ-15 and FZ-20.

I find the database at "http://dcresource.com/reviews/cameraList.php"
very helpful, much better than the one at dpreview.com.

    Select

    -4-5 megapixel
    -Over 10x
    -AF illuminator
    -External Flash
    -Recent Model

    and see what comes up.
