What you need to do is have the cable modem connected to the wireless
router. Then you can use a regular network cable to connect your
desktop pc to the router. Your desktop computer will be able to surf
the web, etc...The desktop pc has no impact on the wireless router
connection. You can leave the desktop pc off if you wish. You must
leave the router on though, otherwise, your laptop and pc will not be
able to access your wireless router. You will also want to configure
your router for Wireless Access Point Security. The instructions would
be included in the router. You will need to buy a wireless access PCMCIA
card for your laptop if your laptop does not have one built-in.
