I was just getting out of boot camp at Ft Knox, Ky. I was standing in line
to turn in my weapon (M-1) when the announcement came over the loudspeakers.
I was then shipped to Ft Belvoir,Va and arrived in DC just in time to see
    the funeral procession.

When I got to Ft Belvoir, I had to qualify with the M-14, but in basic, we
used the M-1. I won the company markmanship trophy with the M-1 but I didn't
do as well with the M-14 in Ft Belvoir.
