  1. If you are running Vista I believe that it will not see FAT formatted
    drives. If I am correct they must be NTFS.

    Not correct.

    Vista will not install on a FAT16 or FAT32 drive, but will read it
    just fine.

    That would rule out most usb sticks and even many preformatted (fat32) usb
    disks.
    Of course, vista will not offer formatting fat32 for a install, instead just
    silently use ntfs - but data drives can still be fat(32).
