    Crash

As others have mentioned try Syncback Free and/or Cobian.

If there is no need to back up open files then Syncback free is probably the
    most flexible and useful.
    (click the 'Expert' mode)
Alternatively Cobian will back up open files and has good scheduling
    options.
Both of these programs are mature and reliable and have a multiplicity of
    options.
And! they come with the advantage of personal or commercial usage.

I've tried many of the Synchronizing style backup programs available.
(I have appended a list I am working my way though below)
But every time I come back to Syncback or Cobian.
The rest are either two simple, undeveloped or just plain buggy.

    Best
    Paul.

    Addendum

If by "System Backup" you mean the entire contents of your computers hard
drives then you are talking about 'Imaging' software.
    In this case try:
Paragon Backup and Recovery Free 10.1
    (Personal use only)
    http://www.paragon-software.com/home/db-express/
Alternatively DriveImageXML is also free ware.

Woger (Suzie Wong) complains Syncback cant do a 'System backup'
Which is correct if you want an 'image' of your hard drives.
But who wants to wait and hour (or more) for a disk imaging program to run
just because you made one change to one file!

If by 'System backup' you mean all of your 'personal data' files only, then
    Cobian/Syncback will do just fine.
On Vista / Windows 7 machines I've found Syncback will copy the User folder
without problem once you filter out the *.DAT *.LOG? and *.tmp files.
The only problem folder is 'appdata' which is where MS sticks Windows
    Mail/Windows Live Mail etc.
Users/Username/appdata contains a 'lot' of redundant data that doesn't need
copying if you are doing a personal files only backup.

To get round this I usually filter out:
LocalLow, Roaming, Temp and Temporary Internet files to cut down on the
number of files synced, though it still means a lot of useless crap is
    copied.
You could further refine the list of subfolders in appdata to exclude but if
you create a second profile in Syncback and include just
/appdata/local/microsoft/Windows Mail - Windows Live Mail - WM contacts
etc.... then you end up with just your personal data.

One of the 'big' advantages of Syncback is it cuts down on the time taken to
back up in normal daily use.
Once Syncback has done the first copy to your backup store, it only copies
the files that have changed or are new.
That way you can have an 'up to date' backup running into the hundreds of GB
that only takes a few minutes to run.
A quick easy backup of this nature is more likely to be done.

    So which is better:
An up to date Syncback backup with all your latest personal files on it.
    or
An out of date Image that hasn't been done for weeks because it takes to
    long to run.
    ?????

    Best
    Paul.

    Both!

An image taken from a known clean & stable system so you can get all
your software back up and running in an hour instead of half a day spent
installing all your applications followed by a quick restore of all the
    data files.

    But here <http://groups.google.co.nz/group/nz.comp/msg/e63b0bbd9d854512> is
another Dimdows “expert†assuring us that file backups are sufficient for
    this purpose.

Who are you supposed to believe?

  5. I separate operating system and installed programs on one
partition and all generated files, ownloads, etc on a second
    partition.

I make an OS/installed programs image about once a week with
Seagate's Disk Wizard and store it on a portable HD.. This creates an
8+ GB image from 14+ GB content in 16–18 minutes and about the same
    time to write back.

I use Syncback to backup selected generated material, but
including some settings from the OS partition, and once the time
consuming initial backup has been completed, takes about 2 minutes to
scan 32+ GB of files and transfer them to a portabe hard drive.

Much of the 32+ GB of generated material is archival in nature
and so does not change on a daily basis.

I do backup selected profiles more frequntly, and sometime more
than once a day when working on some projects.

This combination of image and backups has worked pretty well for
several years, and saved my bacon (with minor exceptions) when I've
had gear failure or been foolish in some action.

    Woger

    mmmmm "the only decent one"

Have you tried Paragon Backup and Restore Free V10 ?
    a) it images a running system.
    b) it writes to Local drives and network locations.
    c) automatically creates a bootable disk out of disk #1 if you write the
    image to CDR/DVDR.

Interesting situation the other day on a < 6 month old i7 860.
Tech had 'imaged' c: with Acronis before hacking into the OS to fix a
    problem.
Problem not solvable so Tech went to restore C: from the Acronis image.
Oh dear BSOD, reboot BSOD, clean disk BSOD....

Fortunately there was another image available made by the aforementioned
    Paragon Backup and Restore Free.
    Worked perfectly!!

Now this Tech is no idiot and immediately did a peer review with his
    colleagues.
Drives were checked, Scandisk, Defragged, Bios reset, RAM checked all 100%
No matter how they did it Acronis would 'not' restore to this particular PC.

My point; No one tool is universally perfect, just as no one backup scheme
    is perfect (or 'only')
Sometime it is a combination of tools that gets closest to the ideal.
Hence something like a Syncback/Cobian -Acronis/Paragon setup would
compliment each other and perhaps come closer to the OP's needs than any
    one of them.

    Best
    Paul.

  7. One of the messages in the earlier exchange of this thread gave
details of which elements of Documents and Settings was worth backing
    up.

I thought I had marked the message to be held so that I could
    perhaps follow the recommendations.

Would someone like to suggest which elements should be backed up.

    For example. I would ignore

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\TEMP

I'm aiming to reduce the time it takes Syncback to process all of
the D & S folder, by either being more selective in the folders backed
up or by nominating folders not to be backed up.

    Any guidance would be welcome.
