Re: Help on Miicrofsoft Expression

    I am a novice and I made myself a home pg using MCSoft Expression.
    Everything goes fine, I download my files to my provider but if I check the
    Homepage on my own computer --- all the pages show up in red with the
    outline of the boxes, but no picture showing inside as it should.

    However, if I check the other computer in the house -- everything shows up
    fine, pictures and all! In an effort to fix this problem, earlier I did
    delete Microsoft Expression and reinstalled it but it did't work. I also
    cleaned out the cache and temporary files but I guess now I am really stuck
    with how to correct this problem. I wonder if I should reinstall windows or
    if there is any steps I can take to fixing something else in the program
    before I take on that big task of deleting and reinstalling XP Windows.

    Any help at all that you could give me would be very much appreciated.

    Regards,
    Franco

    That normally means you 'downloaded' (normally, we say 'uploaded') the
    HTML files _only_, and not the images. You are seeing placeholders for
    the images instead.

    If you had provided a link to your web site, this could likely be
    confirmed.

    ...and probably bolluxed up Expression. *How* did you delete it? Through
    "Add/Remove Programs?"

    Why not just try to reinstall Expression?

    It would help if you posted the URL so we could see the code. I'm guessing
    you just have to refresh your browser.

    I see images all over the place. Most of them are jumping about.

    (hint: animated stuff turns people off. Unsolicited music is even
    worse.)

    So did you fix it? Upload the images?

    Well they haven't improved the rubbish code, never learned from the FP
    mess. The 1st line claims to mark the page as vaild XHTML 1.0, which btw
    you want to avoid for now, stick to HTML 4.01 strict.
    This page is not Valid XHTML 1.0 Transitional!
    Result: Failed validation, 34 Errors
    Doctype: XHTML 1.0 Transitional
    http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=h...(detect automatically)&doctype=Inline&group=0
    or shorter
    http://preview.tinyurl.com/2gmg6h

    Anyway your question,

    >Everything goes fine, I download my files to my provider but if I check the

    uploaded is from your PC to provider.

    >Homepage on my own computer --- all the pages show up in red with the
    >outline of the boxes, but no picture showing inside as it should.

    Then check view source and look at the code for 1 image, compare this
    with another PC.

    >However, if I check the other computer in the house -- everything shows up

    You don't say if you are checking this as a local
    \\computername\fileshare and launching the .html page or as a local
    http://computername/ on every PC. You did post the URL but always check
    another way if possible.

    No. NO and NO.

    >Any help at all that you could give me would be very much appreciated.

    View / Source.

    Find out what the browser thinks it's showing you.

    The whole issue is likely to be around the path's to images, as long as
    some firewall app isn't blocking them.

    This is the logo at the top of the page,

    <img alt="" src="imgB.jpg" width="190" height="146" /></p>

    The src path above assumes the html and image are in the same directory
    and as I can see the images it not a case sensitive issue on the
    provider server. However try and avoid mixed case, use lower case for
    all links / filenames on your pages.

    You can also view the page and right click on an image and check it's
    properties, it will also show the path is it correct?

    So this problem is on your computer, and not as you view it at the web
    host? Sorry, I missed that.

    Do the image files actually exist with your HTML files on *both*
    computers? Use Windows Explorer to determine that.

    I cleaned up the code a little.

    Fixed the lower table spanning to far--
    Removed the music (people hate that)--
    Inserted a layer for the links menu-
    Changed links menu to Arial font & removed underlines--
    Fixed width of train image--
    Changed doctype to HTML 4.01 loose--

    It still won't validate - I only spent a few minutes fixing the annoying
    parts.

    Did it a bit further removed all the inline / repeaed styles, putting in
    divs / span and getting a cascade in the CSS going. Removed some bits
    like borders and the line zug03 it's the wrong color anyway.

    Hope to have it 4.01 strict in a while, won't be sorting all the styles
    but will validate. If you do do just the CSS it meets 2.1 anyway, but
    needs some shorthand, to get the byte count down.

    Not finished the CSS for the same look, still needs some work. The rest
    is 4.01 Strict.

    That was fun, saved as 4 files (a few images manually saved not counted
    in total) was 70KB, validated HTML 4.01 strict and CSS 2.1 a bit of
    inheritance and cascade checked for user CSS / no CSS now gives 4 files
    and 29K.

    Couldn't remember my doctree and selectors so ended up with a bit of

    #sitetop {
    font-size: xx-large;
    color: #f00;
    }

    #sitetop td p + p {
    font-size: large;
    }

    #sitetop img + p {
    font-size: small;
    }

    #sitetop td p + p + p {
    font-size: xx-large;

    for the

    [xx-large]"Wooden Toys"

    [large]The Old Traditional Style

    [xx-large]and Gifts

    Didn't mail, not finished. Mostly just the fun.

    Still some CSS to remove and graphics to crop at least 1 and see if
    others can be made smaller.

    So did you get it fixed?

    There were a couple of questions you didn't answer.

    The side track about the validation and XHTML issues happens a lot. It's
    basically, if you take the MS Expression page and cut out all the
    unnecessary bits. Several things happen.

    It's easier to spot problems.

    Can work better on other browsers and devices like phones, PDAs etc.

    Is a smaller page to load.

    Stuff like the image you have for the links section is 1.jpg 980 x 680
    pixels and 19KB but all one can see in about 1/5th of the image and none
    of the picture in the center. So why not take a small slice which works
    very well 147 x 3 is 680 bytes from 19K, about 30 times smaller.

    Same for a slice of bg.jpg, 5 x 590 at 867 bytes, from 1019 x 595 32K
    this time 37 times smaller.

    Not counting all the images, saving your page is 68KB, saving the
    modified version that looks (better) the same is 28K, 2.5 times smaller.

    With rest of the images 125K to 33K. If you had to pay for the bandwidth
    the 92K extra takes for each access, you would soon learn to tidy things
    up :)

    Hi why,

    Thanks for your time.

    No, I can't fix it; it still shows the page in red on my pc!!

    Are you telling me that most of my pictures are too big?

    What to you men with " cut out all the unnecessary bits"
