I have an Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe mobo which has 2 IDE controllers and 2
    SATA controllers.

The SATA are good in as much as the cables are very compact, but the
connections both at the mobo end and at the HD end seem quite loose
(especially compared to the old parallel ATA ribbon cables).

    Are "loose" SATA connections normal?

Yes. Just make sure they are squarely seated when the drives are in place
and before you close the case.
