It is not clear that Apple has shut them down as Apple is a legally
    sanctioned vertical monopoly.
The only barrier to running Leopard/Tiger/Ocelot/Kittycat on an Intel core
duo motherboard is that Apple has modified the BIOS so you need an
intervening layer of software between the BIOS and the OS.
Users report the distros for doing this available through various bit
torrent sites often arrive corrupted and unusable after multiday downloads
    of 4gb files.
People have reported successfully running the Apple OS on both Intel and
Nvidia chipsets. Although Apple only supplies drivers for the garbage Video
cards/embedded graphics (an ATI2 600 card on a computer that costs
$1400???!!!!) that they peddle on their insanely overpriced boxes Nvidia
    drivers are available.
Apple Boot Camp supplies the software layer in reverse, so XP can be fooled
into working with a the BIOS that is not there.
