Problems with first build

Discussion in 'Windows 64bit' started by =?Utf-8?B?RGF2ZSBE?=, Jan 24, 2006.

  1. I built our first PC with my son and can't get XP 64 to work. I have
installed it several times, and it will run in safe mode but when it boots
from the hard disk in normal mode it inquires about booting from the optical
drive , then displays the Windows logo, then a string of numbers in the lower
right hand of the screen, then it goes blank. I cannot get it to load drivers
in safe mode from a CD. Does anybody have any suggestions?

    Thanks

  2. This is definitely a driver issue, the "inquiry about booting from the
optical drive" is because your Boot device in your BIOS is set to boot from
your optical device which is your CD-ROM. What you could do, is re-run
setup. ensure that you load your storage driver. Also, it could be a driver
issue with your video card, try obtaining the latest drivers for your video
card and install it in safe mode.

  3. Thanks for your advice - it worked.

I downloaded a 64 bit video driver (ATI 64_dd_ccc_29619) from the
manufacturer (ATI) and it gave instructions to first install Microsoft NET.
Framework. I tried to install them from Safe mode and failed; the error said
that they could not detect the hardware or software required. The video card
was listed as working properly in Device Manager, so I tried to install the
ATI driver from within device manager and it worked. I was then able to
install the Intel drivers that came with the motherboard. So far so good.

    I really appreciate your help.

  4. Yes, the ATI Catalyst program uses .NET, but the driver doesn't need it. So
you end up having to do a two stage install when you're having problems like
this - the first, in safe mode, to get the driver in. Then, once it comes up
and is working, you can install the full package to get the extra Catalyst
    features if you want them.
