Problem solved - sort of.

I have had two nagging problems. One was that the icons for most of
my hard drives had suddenly switched to the default "unknown item"
Windows icon. The other was that I couldn't access a site
"www.shortnews.com." I couldn't even access the crawl for the site on
another site. So I went through my start up files in msconfig and
under Services I discovered that the item "Plug and Play" was causing
both problems. I have done virus scans and spyware scans and there
was never anything found. This is described as a Microsoft service,
fortunately however, I have all Microsoft services revealed, or I
would not have so readily found the problem as they are usually
hidden. Which makes me think that it may be bad. I see where it can
either be essential or a trojan (W32.Randex.R Trojan). Any ideas as
to which it is would be appreciated. I have an old copy of
services.exe that I could replace it with, if necessary. Thanks.

Oh, I just tried to remove services.exe and replace it with an older
and known to be clean copy and my overwrite was mysteriously replaced
    with the suspected copy somehow.
