    =========================================
If I try to ping (to check my tcpip stack etc )
    I can ping 127.0.0.1 (fine)
but if I try and ping any of the bigpond ip's I get an error message
    saying unable to connect,
I rang BigPond support and tried turning moden off and on, adding a
    domain name suffix (vic.bigpond.net.au) etc.
I also was unable to telnet update-server as requested by support,
all I got was a no connect message.
I have run "repair " on the network icon, in ipconfig I have released,
renewed etc till I am blue in the face.

I had not installed any new programs just before this crisis.

I have virus scanned the whole drive as I had been told (not by BP)
that it may be the win mytob virus, no that was all clean, I ran
spybot and there was only the the "alexia " one there.

I have been to the Doug Knox website and downloaded the winsock fix
    for xp, still no luck.
I ran the sfc /scannow to check for corrupted files and after it went
through its hoops I was still getting this error.
Finally I reloaded XP (pro) to a 50mb partition that was spare and
    this works correctly.
I really want to repair my main drive c: installation as I have so
many programs that have been installed there and I do not want to
    waste time reinstalling again.

I would really appreciate some help re this.
